Support for Educational Teams

The Educational Team Development Service at the London Deanery offers free tailor-made support to educational teams across London.

We are particularly keen to offer support:

  • where problems with training have been identified (eg through feedback on GMC surveys, or difficulties with recruitment)
  • where teams need help in balancing educational, clinical and other demands
  • where team members are uncertain about their educational roles and responsibilities, or their skills as supervisors and trainers
  • when new educational teams are set up (eg through reorganisations or the appointment of new lead providers):

Requests for support can come direct from the team lead or via educators including Directors of Medical Education, Heads of Schools and Trust Liaison Deans.

Any educational team providing postgraduate medical and dental training can request support, including clinical and educational supervisors within one speciality in a trust, or a wider group of faculty in one trust.

Resources available

In consultation with team leads and Deanery educators, we are able to offer a wide range of resources for team development. These include:

  • tailor-made programmes of team building, training, facilitation or mediation
  • in house workshops in educational supervision, or supervision skills for clinical teachers
  • support and guidance for Directors of Medical Education, Medical Directors and Heads of Schools in developing teams and networks
  • learning sets for educators
  • Observation of clinical teaching

Feedback about the service

‘My impression is that we have now overcome the adversarial atmosphere and continue to improve supervision and feedback’ (Training Programme Director)

‘I want to warmly commend everyone involved in this. I am grateful to [the ETD team] for all that they have done.  Equally, on behalf of the Trust, I would like to thank trainers and trainees for embracing the process…Well done everyone.’ (Director of Medical Education)

‘Basically we were impressed in that there seemed to be consistent evidence of a marked improvement. The trainees…had only positive feedback on their training, including the presence of consultants providing a high level of day to day clinical supervision. One or two trainees who had experience of how things used to be…also said that the situation had improved…Many thanks for your input’ (Head of School)
