Guides for Facilitators

In order to support Faculty Development across Lead Provider (LP)/ Local Education Provider (LEP) networks ‘Guides for Facilitators’ have been developed to enable faculty within networks to deliver specific courses in-house.

Guides for facilitators are currently available for the following courses:

  • Educational supervision
  • Developing clinical teaching
  • Managing the trainee in difficulty
  • Workplace based assessments

The courses cover issues relevant to the domains identified within the Professional Development Framework for Supervisors. The framework outlines the training and accreditation required in order for supervisors in London Trusts to meet regulatory requirements that came into force in January 2010.

The framework is designed around seven key areas of activity, all of which relate to the role of the postgraduate medical supervisor.  The precise emphasis on individual areas varying depending on the supervisory role.

The seven areas are:

  1. Ensuring safe and effective patient care
  2. Establishing and maintaining an environment for learning
  3. Teaching and facilitating learning
  4. Enhancing learning though assessment
  5. Supporting and monitoring educational progress
  6. Guiding personal and professional development
  7. Continuing professional development as an educator

By ensuring that supervisors meet the requirements of the framework providers will be well placed to meet the proposed GMC formal requirements for approval of trainers.  The GMC is currently leading a consultation on a framework for the approval of all named trainers during 2012 with a view to applying the framework in 2013. Reassuringly, the proposed GMC framework applies the seven areas set out in the Framework for the Professional Development of Postgraduate Medical Supervisors published by the Academy of Medical Educators. The Professional Development Framework is entirely consistent with the Academy of Medical Educators framework. We do not therefore envisage significant changes to the approval of trainers in London.
